The SpongeBob SquarePants Anime, simply referred to as SpongeBob SquarePants (Japanese: スポンジ・ボブ Hepburn: Suponji Bobu, pronounced Spongey Bobbu) is an ongoing Japanese anime television series produced by an upcoming animation studio using what EVIL Productions left behind in order to produce a quality fan series built around his and Narmak's ideas. Its overall plot outline is loosely based around the manga and anime created by Narmak and is considered to be a what if scenario of what would happen if SpongeBob was a Japanese anime. The story is currently being rewritten again under yet another animation studio. One of the many changes made in EVIL Prodction's version is this show's setting which was made to be more like modern day Japan. It is broadcast at 9:00 p.m. on TV Tokyo.

Just like in Narmak's version, the anime centers around protagonist SpongeBob SquarePants as he tries to save his best friend Squidward Tentacles from the clutches of Sheldon Plankton and his army of minions, but everything goes haywire and soon SpongeBob must choose to save Squidward along with his other friends. At some point SpongeBob's best friend Patrick dies in combat, but later comes back alive in a later arc. This show considered to be a lot more bloody and violent than most SpongeBob spin-offs, but still family friendly for the most part. Some fans accepted some episodes having a TV-14 rating. Each season contains 50 episodes.

Episodes (Wikia Fan Series)

Season 1 - Serial Experiments Squid

Help Wanted - Debut at the Krusty Krab : Written by ZedKong

Local sushi chef, SpongeBob SquarePants, decides to work for one of the most Americanized burger restaurants in all of Bikini Bottom, the Krusty Krab, a small business owned by Mr. Krabs, a krab who while cheap treats his employees well enough to keep them employed. Fat greasy local otaku, Bubble Bass, decides to go to the Krusty Krab for the first time to be SpongeBob's first customer. SpongeBob screws up the order until another person with a different opinion ends up liking his burgers. Squidward begins to feel jealously towards SpongeBob building up anger that will lead to him becoming SpongeBob's main rival (TV-14-DLSV)

Overarching Storyline (Manga)

The Manga has four different narrative levels. There are different branching series storylines going on at once inside this anime believe it or not. There are four narrative levels in each storylines that can be seen only with those with an IQ of 150+ SNOO PINGAS. Only the highest of high SpongeBob Gods know the true storyline by heart. Some say that they can see images in 5-D to see hte storyline unfold via time travel and "imagination."

FOUR NARRATIVE LEVELS A: The Cosmic Level (Gods) B: The Political Level (Governments) C: The Individual Level (Folks) D: The Spiritual Level (Ghosts) The First set of volumes adapts episodes from Season 1 of Spongebob and focuses on the conflict between Squidward and SpongeBob as he is going to be recruited into the Chum Five. The Second set of volumes build on the early death of Patrick, acting as a motivator to get revenge on Squidward only to find out that Patrick has conducted various crimes of his own through an alter ego. Some theorize that his soul gets taken over by the ugly barnacle who is also the Hash Slinging Slasher at the same time. The Flying Dutchman also becomes a much larger villian in Season 2 due to the dead being a consistant theme in that season. The Second Set of anime and manga chapters are a rushed combination of Season 2 and 3 arcs, which is why certain arcs fell flat in comparison. Not to mention the countless filler episodes that aired in between the Krusty Fallout Arc and Forest Club Arc.

The Final set of volumes and episodes in the fan series adapts select arcs within the 3rd and 4th Seasons along with a series of disliked fan sequel miniseries that diverge from the manga known as the EVIL trilogy (Seeds of EVIL, Regin of EVIL, and Triumph of EVIL). With the first two miniseries being referred to as click-bait filler and the third miniseries giving what fans wanted, a conclusion to the Hash Slinging Slasher arc resulting in the saddest ending in this anime. The final season is a lot longer than the other two due to the fact it adapts both the second half of Spongebob's season 3 and "select" episodes from Season 4 along with bringing new peices of lore that are unseen and do not need to be explained. Many didn't like the inclusion of Tibbett's role in the series however he famously wrote the "Gary Come Home" arc which was regarded as one of the most arcs even to this day. Eventually the final half of the Final Season adopts a weirder take on the movie, akin to Evangelion 3.33 and the End of Evangelion and its Evangelion type writing later inspires the fan miniseries set of sequels to be a mecha based. The role of the Hash-Slinging Slasher is seen throughout as he maintains an important figure within the series.

Sagas and Arcs (Manga Analysis and List by an Otaku)

Friendship Saga

  • Arcs: (Friendship Arc, Tea Dome Arc, Pizza Delivery Arc, Ripped Pants Arc, Bubble Buddy Arc, SB-129 Arc)

This saga is straightforward, it introduces our main characters. It starts off with a long arc that starts with a two volume slow paced mini arc named Help Wanted that sets up our characters and world. This arc opens up with a foreshadowing for Patrick and Squidward's betrayal as well as the rise of the worm who will attack in the third season of the anime. After this introduction, this arc establishes who are main characters are showing very basic themes involving Squidward and SpongeBob's initial dislike towards each other as well as Squidward descent towards madness that will eventually bring him towards the Chum Bucket to be used by Plankton. The entire later parts of the arc introduce each character that will lead up to this story's first real arc, the Fry Cook Games. Bubble Bass is seen in this arc, but has yet to start learning combat. (TV-14-DLV)

Tea Dome Arc

As part of the Friendship Arc, this is where Karate is first introduced along with the powers associated with various Karate disciplines. Sandy is the first enemy fought in the manga, her fight introduces the series complex themes of life vs death and what a fish's worst nightmare means to SpongeBob and friends, the same nightmare that will later be seen in the Z arc also known as the final battle against Plankton and his final scheme. Sandy seeks to trap SpongeBob in a death trap hoping to train him as a sensei for karate training. Patrick and SpongeBob grow together as friends attempting to escape the trap known as the Tea Dome using their Pinky Up technique.

Pickles Arc

Bubble Bass is fought in two epic battles that end his schemes in the manga but is confronted several times by our characters. He is among one of the first characters to be fought in the manga, but Sandy is fought first in the Friendship arc. Before joining the Chum Five, Bubble Bass is merely seeking to torment SpongeBob to make a krabby patty with Pickles. Plankton starts to gain interest after Bubble Bass shows what he jerk he is to SpongeBob and recuits him as part of the Chum Five. Slowly SpongeBob begins to see who is attempting to tarnish his employee of the month as well as the Krusty Krab as a whole.

Fry Cook Games Saga

  • Fry Cook Games Saga (Fools in April Arc, Neptune's Spatula Arc, Patrick vs. SpongeBob Arc)

This is the anime's first attempt at setting up a tournament arc where characters show up and fight in the Fry Cook Games. There is a lot of banter between SpongeBob and Patrick as Patrick is going to be used by Plankton. Neptune's Spatula is also a big deal along with the fight against King Neptune. Many manga readers do not want to spoiler the next set of chapters as it is all one big surprise waiting to be unraveled.

Shanghaied Saga

  • Shanghaied / Revenge of the Flying Dutchman Saga (Rock Bottom Arc, Golden Spatula Arc, Flying Dutchman Arc)

Beware of the Flying Dutchman, curses are everywhere. The townspeople are haunted as the ghost lingers at every step of the way. Somehow the Legend of the Golden Spatula is connected to the Flying Dutchman legend despite the two stories being very different. Our underwater friends embark on a sea journey to Rock Bottom in order to find the golden spatula.

Battle For Bikini Bottom Saga

  • Battle for Bikini Bottom Saga (Krab Borg Arc, Band Geeks Arc, Chocolate with Nuts Arc, Idiot Box Arc, Dream Arc, Nasty Patty Arc, Industrial Park Arc, Robo Patrick Arc, Clams Arc, Karate Island Arc, Master Udon Arc, Robo Squidward Arc, Plankton's Army Arc, Robo SpongeBob Arc, Robo Plankton Arc)

This arc and Chum Five can be read in any order as the two SAGAs take place before the final Arc, however the Battle for Bikini Bottom Saga hosts some of the best and most entertaining episodes and chapters in the manga. Many arcs like Band Geeks are seen as some of the manga's most entertaining parts and it is not hard to see why. There is a well regarded filler arc known as Karate Island that takes place between the Robo Squidaward battle and Robo Patrick. After the final defeat of the Chum Five or before the defeat, Plankton decides to create an army of robots who serve him seeing that his human friends were unworthy of serving him. Unfortunately, for him this creates Robot Plankton, a character that will later appear in the fanfiction manga chapters where he is part of a grander plan associated with EVIL. Anyways the failure of this plan causes Plankton to write a bunch of plans which then causes Plan Z to magically appear to him which begins the final arc in the manga.

Chum Five Saga

  • Chum Five Saga (Bubble Bass Arc, Kevin Revenge Arc, Flying Dutchman Revenge Arc, Dennis [Anime] Arc, Flats Arc [Manga], Squilliam Arc, Strangler Arc, DoodleBob Arc, Squidward Arc, Chum Raid Arc, Krusty Fallout Arc, Forest Club Arc, Graveyard Shift Arc, Hash Slinging Slasher Arc, Plankton Arc)

The arc most often adapted by various anime production studios. In this arc, Squidward finally betrays SpongeBob to join the Chum Bucket after years of having no employee of the month. Plankton has yet to come up with his most evil scheme yet, but this time he will not let himself lose with his allies that are all after SpongeBob.

Z / Shell City Arc (Final Manga Arc)

  • Z SAGA (Goofy Goober Arc, Shell City Arc, Planktopolis Arc, King Neptune Arc)

The final set of chapters deal with a quest to deal with Plankton and Dennis in order to foil their plans of stealing Neptune's crown to frame Mr. Krabs. Just like in the original film, SpongeBob must travel to Shell City to obtain Neptune's crown. Dark David Hasselhoff appears in one of the chapters to fight against SpongeBob. The manga stopped in this arc and every chapter after this was either fanfiction or filler but a remaining theme had been the battle between Patrick and his alter ego, the Hash Slinging Slasher. Was considered to be the perfect ending to the anime until the bombardment of fillers and fanfiction come to undo or retcon the ending.

Gary Come Home Arc (Anime Filler Arc)

Barnacle Man who has been hinted as the next main antagonist has been laughing seeing that the Reign of EVIL is about to be set in motion shortly after the final defeat of Plankton. In a surprise twist, Gary turns out to be the leader of a set of bad guys known as EVIL who gave Plankton plan Z in order to rule the ocean along with another group who seeks to drive Mr. Krabs to bankrupcy but unlike EVIL and the Chum Five, this other villainous group wants to maintain peace in the ocean by getting rid of corporatocracy within underwater in order to set up a utopia of peace. Various puppet restaurants have been set up to make sure that Mr. Krabs loses his business or goes bankrupt. These two groups are the new antagonists that have yet to be desired. Gary is among one of the highest ranking members of this Akatsuki style group. SpongeBob must track down Gary in order to defeat him in a final battle. He has many other members in the group to deal with which are dealt in subsequent manga chapters. Gary is a 1,000 year old sorcerer with untold powers as seen in the Dream Arc where he appeared to be a helpful ally. This arc which was supposed to be part of a sequel anime confused many viewers and made people question the actions of Gary in the anime.

Seeds of EVIL (Filler/Fanfiction) Saga

  • EVIL Saga (Adapted as Seeds of EVIL) [Gary Returns Arc, Sell of a Man Arc, Dirty Bubble Arc, Atomic Flounder Arc, Jumbo Shrimp Arc, Barnacle Man Arc, Hash Slinging Hangover Arc, Squilliam Returns Arc, Man Ray Arc]

This is the story where EVIL is fought. There are various different characters each with different motivations. More villains than what would normally be expected. Even some characters who are unlikely to join Barnacle Man would show up. There is a surprising amount of betrayals amount villainous factions and even within some of the main characters. Despite being a trilogy of some sorts, EVIL is only fought in Seeds and parts of Triumph. Fans of the anime have regarded the trilogy as noncanon, messy, and full of filler. Thoughts on Tibbitt's writing sparked discussion on the web as they saw the trilogy in a similar fashion to George Lucas's prequel trilogy.

Reign of EVIL (Filler/Fanfiction) Saga

  • Atlantis SquarePantis Saga (Fanfiction) (Adapted as Reign of EVIL) [Kelp Shake Arc, Donut of Shame Arc, Atlantis SquarePantis Arc, LRH Corruption Arc, Neo-Atlantis Arc, Dark Future Arc, Clash of Triton Arc, Atlantean War Arc, 9th Dimension Arc, Mindy Betrayal Arc, Hash Slinging Resurrection Arc, Doomsday Arc]

This arc is a fanfiction attempt to tell a story about the origins of the Atlantean Amulet as well as the most insane expanded universe backstory related to SpongeBob that is surprisingly complex despite using one of the most disliked episodes in combination with a rejected storyboard for a movie to boot said story-line. Fans have described this season as convoluted and insane and went in with mixed reception. Did the story work out? Not really.

Triumph of EVIL (Filler/Fanfiction) Saga

  • Hash Slinging Slasher Conclusion SAGA (Fanfiction) (Adapted as Triumph of EVIL) [InSPONGEiac Arc, A Pal for Gary Arc, One Course Meal Arc, Demolition Doofus Arc, Abrasive SpongeBob Arc, Big Birthday Blowout / Clipshow Arc, Hash Slinging Conclusion Arc]

The fan conclusion is here, after many years, the ending has come. The final battle between SpongeBob and Patrick who is being controlled and has to be killed off. From this point SpongeBob sees that in order to keep his job, he must kill his best friend. But before SpongeBob fights Patrick, he must defeat Abrasive SpongeBob who is rewritten to be more like the SpongeBob seen in the SpongeBob on the Wii U videos. Abrasive SpongeBob is an insane sponge who has taken over SpongeBob's body and thrown him into a coma known as the Scumbob Episodes doing various evil things to the characters. After SpongeBob obtains his body back from the Abrasive Side, a truly emotional battle that is ruined by the amount of fluff in between that gives this anime, a satisfying ending.

Critical Reception (Wikia Fan Series)

This is just sloppy writing!!!!! It was already proven that Gary's body is unique and the snail virus built up a immunity to Squirdward's attack. If anything Patrick is the one who should have died. Not only is he closer to spongebob, but the best friends 4 ever and Valentine's arc cement him as one of the best support characters in years. Quitting this anime. It was good in the beginning, but the author is such a sell out. Ever since the pioneers arc the series has been on a decline. I mean the hash slinging slasher mystery murder episode was good, but it only did so much. - SIRTreehugger

They probably should have stopped after the Squid Society Arc, Patrick was best girl and my favorite easily. But of course the anime always have to shit all over childhood friends and make the generic "first girl you see" win because they don't know how to write compelling romances. And then you have the terrible fucking power asspulls, Spongebob only had basic karate training and it was shown Sandy Uchiha was clearly stronger; how the FUCK did Spongebob beat metal Mr. Krabs, who beat Sandy, by pulling out a stupid Magic Circle that protects him from anything that was NEVER previously revealed? Such a shitty asspull and recently the anime as been filled with them. I might as well finish it though, I've been following it since the Chum Exams, which is easily one of the best shounen arcs of all time. Plus I'm too attached to these characters to stop now, might as well see who ends up as a couple. - Jazzidoo

it's slightly triggering when there are these memes that are copying manga style but then they fail the most basic thing. - Mommid

God, the writing in this has become Jimmy Neutron level bad. How dare they not explain how Spongebob's new power works in the very same chapter it's introduced in? That can only mean they never will explain how it works, and this series is doomed to end the same way Jimmy Neutron did. You all remember, Jimmy gets a new power up, defeats evil jimmy, timeskip where he gets together with Cindy, all rushed to shit. I can only expect the same to happen with Spongebob. This series has hit rock bottom. - DrewBreakman

The "Gary Come Home" arc in Season 3, is easily one of the best written arcs in all of shounen. - S-ClassRen

Inspired by Narmak's Anime of the same name. Post what you think of this series here, and don't forget to write your name next to your opinion!

  • This series has a rating of 6.8 on tv.com and 6.1 on IMDB.
  • The previous version of the fan series had an ambitious plan to unite the story Narmak had wrote with the scrapped movie plot of the third SpongeBob film where in the old draft the evil alien cat people along with other powerful groups are seen as the true creators of Plan Z in an attempt to bring regime change to Bikini Bottom. The full version would be uploaded to a gaint text file, trust me the old storyline was a laughable mess, you would get a kick out of it.
  • The new storyline takes out many of the questionable elements that EVIL Productions attempted to write in. EVIL and Atlantis War Arcs are still in the storyline but their implementation will be far better done.
  • In the manga, Flats is fought in place in Dennis in the Chum Five because Dennis is fought in the Shell City / Z Arcs.
  • The previous versions of episodes 2-4 were deemed uncanon due to production companies being switched.
